Origins
From Stonemasons’ Guilds to a Global Fraternity
Freemasonry traces its roots to the medieval stonemasons’ guilds of Britain and Europe. These skilled craftsmen organised themselves into lodges to regulate their trade, share knowledge, and uphold high standards of workmanship. Over time, men outside the stonemasons’ trade were welcomed into the lodges, and by the 17th and 18th centuries, Freemasonry had evolved into the symbolic and philosophical organisation we recognise today, one closely aligned with Enlightenment ideals of reason, tolerance and self-improvement.
