The fraternity traces its roots to the medieval stonemasons’ guilds of Britain and Europe. These skilled craftsmen organised themselves into lodges to regulate their trade, share knowledge, and uphold high standards of workmanship. Over time, men outside the stonemasons’ trade were welcomed into the lodges, and by the 17th and 18th centuries, Freemasonry had evolved into the symbolic and philosophical organisation we recognise today, one closely aligned with the Enlightenment ideals of reason, tolerance, and self-improvement.

Three foundational principles guide every Freemason:

Brotherly Love: mutual respect and understanding among members from every walk of life.

Relief: charitable service and practical support for those in need, within the Lodge and the wider community.
