Freemasonry, Belief and Public Life: How It Actually Works

Freemasonry asks each member to hold a personal belief in a Supreme Being, while leaving matters of religious doctrine, worship and denomination entirely to the individual. It has no clergy, sacraments or theology of its own, and does not tell a member which faith to follow.

Masonic promises and moral teachings are framed within a sense of accountability greater than oneself. This shared foundation allows members from different religious traditions to meet together. Lodge language is intentionally non-denominational, leaving each man’s faith and practice to his own conscience.

Discussion of religious doctrine can quickly divide people, so sectarian religious debate is not permitted in lodge meetings. This does not diminish anyone’s belief. It protects harmony and keeps the lodge focused on the principles members share: integrity, charity, friendship and personal responsibility.

A lodge does not endorse parties, candidates or political programmes, and partisan political discussion is excluded from meetings. Members remain free to hold their own lawful opinions and take part in civic life as individuals, but they do not speak politically on behalf of Freemasonry.

Membership should never be used to gain business, political or personal favour. Freemasonry’s emphasis on fairness requires members to act honestly and avoid conflicts between friendship and public or professional duty.

These principles make it possible for men who vote differently, worship differently and lead very different lives to meet as equals. They are not asked to erase their differences, only to treat one another with respect.
